VOCATIONAL TRAINING
Shiksha has set up vocational training facilities for underprivileged youth to develop their skills in the following fields with a view to encourage their economic productively:
Computer lessons - MS office
Sewing, stitching and embroidery
Beautician
ADULT LITERACY
Shiksha is conducting adult literacy with a view to empower poor people to live life with dignity.
ENGLISH SPEAKING
Poor students studying in not-so-popular schools are unable to converse in English. Realizing the importance of English speaking, shiksha runs spoken English classes for such students and youth.
Success Story
Shiksha renovated the building and electric connection, water supply and desks for the school adopted in 2003. We engaged 11 teachers and helping staff with a view to providing quality education. Within a year of our taking over the strength of the school grew from 40 to 250 students. Due to certain circumstances beyond the control of shiksha we had to hand over the developed school to the government of Haryana in 2006. Shiksha launched a drive in search of a new school building in Mohyal colony, Jharsa (near sector 40), Gurgaon in May 2006.
The new school building was modified to meet our requirement for classrooms, office, kitchen, etc. shifted our dedicated faculty from the old school to this school. The parents of underprivileged children living in the slums nearby were inspired by our team through door-to-door canvassing to send them to the school. The school finally started functioning from 17th July 2006 with the strength of about 100 children.
Impressed with the performance of the school, the parents started sending more and more children to the school. As of august 2009, the strength of the school has crossed 500. We had to regret further admissions with heavy heart due to acute paucity of accommodation .Even today, some of the classes being held in the corridor. Most of the children coming to the school are the first generation learners, who now aspire to complete with the privileged ones. All the students appearing for 5th class Haryana board examination (2009) have come out with flying colours with 100% first division scores.
Recently, shiksha has started another school in sector 49, Gurgaon in association with the education department. The school building was done up and electric connection/fittings and water supply were arranged by shiksha. The school started functioning from 2nd April 2009 with strength of about 60 children and three dedicated teachers. Within a couple of months, strength of the school increased to 150 students.
Activities
shiksha believes in holistic development of its students. Apart from academics, yoga classes are conducted for senior students.
shiksha has provided many facilities like art, craft, dance, music and indoor & outdoor games to enhance creativity of the children.
Children are made conscious of the need to protect the environment.
Mid Day Meals
Appreciating the need for providing nutritious food, shiksha serves simple, healthy and hygienic mid-day meals.
